Wondering what to wear to a glow party or what outfit to wear to a black light party? If so, you have come to the right place. Below we will give you all the right advice to ensure your clothing and make up and/or body art glows in the dark and looks amazing underneath the black lights.

Which clothes glow under black lights?

While we can certainly suggest the best colors to choose for black light parties and also give you information on which materials tend to work best for your glow party clothing, we don't have an exact formula. Sometimes items that we thought would glow don't, and items that we thought wouldn't glow do (especially when it comes to items made of plastic). The best way to figure it out is to test the clothing for yourself before purchasing it. To do this we highly recommend you purchase a small black light flashlight that you can take with you when you go shopping. Shine the black light flashlight on the items you are considering to see if they react under the light. You may need to cup your hands around part of the item to create a dark space or hold the item in a dark cupboard or bag in the store.

Which colors glow under black lights?

When selecting what to wear for a black light party you want to find glow party outfits and materials that are either white or fluorescent. The brighter the neon color the greater the chance that the item will glow. Fluorescent green, pink, yellow, and orange are the safest bets. You can get lucky with some purple, red and blue colors though these colors tend to be a little more hit and miss. Fluorescent cotton, polyester, spandex or paper materials are safe bets. Some party stores and websites (such as partycity.com) actually label items that glow under black lights to help you with your selection. The more color you can add to your costume the better, and crazy colored accessories are a must.

UV reacting pens and paints

One of the most fun things about glow parties is that they allow you to draw or paint amazing glowing designs on each other with UV reacting pens or paints. You have a few options for getting artistic with glowing designs. Neon pens are the least likely to make a mess. Standard highlighters will often work just fine. Orange, yellow, green and pink usually always work. You will occasionally get lucky with some brands of red, blue or purple although most brands won't glow in these colors. You can also purchase invisible ink pens. These awesome pens are invisible under normal light but glow in various colors under black lights. The cool thing about this is no one will even know you are covered in crazy neon designs until you step underneath the black lights. Neon paints, while being more likely to cause a mess, will probably glow the brightest. As long as you go with a water based neon paint you should be able to clean up any spillages from your party guests.

Don't want to spend money on your glow party outfit?

That's okay. There is a good chance you don't have to. Have a look in your cupboards and around your house and I'm sure you will find some things that glow under black lights. Anything that is neon colored or white is likely to work. If you have any fluro yellow or orange hi-visibility shirts for work or for running at night these will glow. Maybe you have some neon fabric somewhere that you can cut up for headbands and armbands. If all else fails wear a white cotton tshirt as this will glow a blueish color underneath the black lights.
